I genuinely do wish that I had - somewhere along the way - managed to absorb the information that lets some people stride about the country going, 'ah, the lesser-spotted widget in that branch of the thingummy tree'; but, for some reason, I just haven't. There are about three trees I can name with any sort of confidence; ditto birds; ditto plants. I often form the resolution to try and dispel my lamentable ignorance about this stuff (i.e, the world) but - and this in common with most of the resolutions I make - I just never seem to get round to doing it.
That being said, I don't think that those berries are rose-hips. Vauge memories do surface for me of stripping rose-hips as a kid (to make itching powder out of the furry insides) and, remembering those, I think they were fatter and more elongated than these (and these berries were on a tree, anyway, rather than the straggly kind of bush I remember attacking as a kid).
